New to roller derby?
Watch the jammers. They’re the skaters with the stars on their helmets, and they score a point for their team each time they lap an opponent.
Scoring: The lead jammer can call off the jam by touching her hands to her hips. Both jammers can score points, whether they’re lead or not. Some jams have no lead jammer, and will go the full two minutes.
Penalties: There are all sorts of reasons why skaters are sent to the penalty box. The more you watch, the more you’ll remember the refs’ hand signals.
Strategy: Why are they just standing there? Or why are they skating away so fast? Strategy! The slower your team goes, the easier it will be for the jammers to make their way back around to score, and vice versa. Of course, there’s a lot more to it than that. Keep watching.
